The Oscars have been the center of attention in the media for 97 years and have been a way to give actors, actresses and the crew of many projects credit for their hard work. However, there can be some occasions where it feels like an actress or actor did not get the recognition and attention they deserved for their effort.
The new movie, Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, has taken over movie theatres, and even social media with its particular casting, and phenomenal vocals by the actors and actresses.
But why hasn’t the Wicked cast and creators received the recognition they deserved when it came to their performances?
Wicked was nominated for 8 categories yet only won 2 awards, production and costume design.
“I think the Oscars are tough because it’s part of the academy so it’s a small group of people who vote on those things and I think that hardcore film and cinematography buffs have different opinions on what constitutes good cinema if that makes sense. I liked Wicked, and I thought that it was beautiful but I think in terms of originality it was a cinematic remake or an existing musical and so I think that the other independent films got what they deserved,” Highlands drama teacher Claire LaNicca said.
Many amazing movies and projects in the entertainment industry were brought to the eyes of people all over the world in 2024 such as, A Complete Unknown starring Timothee Chalamet, and Wicked. These are just a few of the many projects and actors that were robbed of their work along with their team that made it possible to create something truly amazing.
A Complete Unknown, starring Timothee Chalamet, has opened the eyes of many about the life of notorious and successful Bob Dylan and his work in the music industry. The filming for A Complete Unknown started in late March of 2024, taking place in New Jersey with the occasional travel to New York City for different scenes.
The Brutalist, a 3 time Oscar winner, while an impressive film, used AI to enhance actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones Hungarian accents in the film.
Because of this, controversy has arisen to the surface especially when there are actors spending hours upon hours working on their own impressions for a role, such as Chalamet in A Complete Unknown.
Timothee Chalamet took his part to a new level by learning how to play the guitar, harmonica, and even worked with a dialect coach to achieve Bob Dylan’s Nasal voice. It took Chalamet five years to perfect his Bob Dylan persona, and also learned to perform thirteen of Bob Dylan’s songs including playing them all on guitar and harmonica with a fake nose on.
In my opinion, I feel as though with Chalamet’s dedication and talent, A Complete Unknown should have won at least one of their nominated categories, right?
A Complete Unknown was nominated for 7 different categories however, was unsuccessful winning 0/7 awards.
“I watched that movie [A Complete Unknown] and it was phenomenal. Usually Timothee Chalamet is a difficult actor to watch because I just see Timothee Chalamet and not his character, but in A Complete Unknown I would see him as Bob Dylan, not Timothee Chalamet,” Ivy Roberts (10) said.
