For the first time since 1998, a Nike advertisement aired during one of the first commercial breaks of the Super Bowl.
The popular company Nike released the ad during Super Bowl 59 on Sunday between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. The commercial featured several professional female athletes from around the United States, being narrated by the award winning hip-hop/rap artist Doechii.
Athletes including WNBA star Caitlin Clark, who signed a deal with Nike last year; WNBA champion and 2024 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson, who released her signature Nike shoe this month; Sophia Smith Wilson, U.S. soccer star and Olympic gold medalist; Olympic gold medalist sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson; and 2024 WNBA Championship winner Sabrina Ionescu appear in the black-and-white commercial.
The film was directed by commercial director Kim Gehrig, and the song “Whole Lotta Love” by Grammy winning artist Led Zeppelin.
The commercial is titled “So Win”, a new brand slogan for Nike.
“I thought the ad was really well produced, showing famous women’s athletes who have accomplished so much really made it special and brought attention to women’s sports,” female basketball and soccer player Katie Bucher (11) said.
With women’s sports being on the rise within the past year, it was only fitting that Nike made the commercial. All of the females featured in the advertisement played an extremely crucial role in the sky-rocketing views, sales, and overall attention of women’s athletics.
“Women’s sport isn’t the future, it’s right now,” Ionescu said in a Nike announcement. “We’re seeing it in packed arenas, in TV ratings, in the way people are showing up for the game like never before. Commanding attention isn’t about being the loudest in the room. It’s about making sure that when you step up, everyone takes notice.”
