The lights hit all at once, heart racing, caught between the rush of excitement and nerves of performing in front of family and friends. As the light fades and the teacher steps to the center of the stage, that nervousness all goes away once the music begins playing. Everyone gathered together to play one song for family and friends. There is something magical about it.
Music has a special place in everyone’s heart, no matter how big or small. For most of us, music is a constant. Whether at school, work, in an elevator, or while walking around the park. Music is everywhere, and it is undeniable that it adds energy to our daily life. Music brings joy. Without it, the world would feel quieter and a little less alive.
“Being a choir teacher, it is just something that I think is really necessary for a well rounded person to be able to celebrate music in a way that’s beneficial to them,” choir teacher Chris Eaton said.
Music has always played an important role in human life and it shows how people and cultures change over time.
From the smooth rhythms of jazz to the bold beats of hip hop, the lyrical storytelling of rap and to the catchy hooks of pop, music has constantly shifted, reflecting the changing world around us.
“I think again music has just become so embedded in our daily lives whether it’s through social media, through the students in school who are taking any sort of music classes it’s just, it’s become a part of our daily lives even when we don’t recognize it.” Eaton said.
One major effect of how music has changed is technology.
Before bluetooth or any other music platform was made, everyone had to listen to music from their radios or stereo, but with technology improving you can find new music in a matter of seconds just by a click of a button.
“Game Changing,” Eaton said. “Tik Tok especially, there are songs that get famous just from Tik Tok you don’t have to listen to on the radio anymore so I think that has made a huge difference in terms of the amount of people music is able to reach in a short amount of time.”
Many would say that technology has influenced the music industry in a positive way. The soft and low sound of an electric guitar or the different audio station writers use.
There is music for almost any mood a person might be feeling and that is what makes music so great. It can appeal to any person at any time.
“I love that there are so many kinds of music through the years. You can find music to identify with any kind of mood situation,” choir teacher Beth Rowland said.
Music is so important to so many people. Sometimes it is the only thing that will make someone’s day a little lighter. Or it is an accessibility that allows a person or student to focus.
As music evolves, it allows for many different genres of music to grow or develop. Newer artists start mixing music. The emotion behind country music mixed together with the dynamic and tempo of pop music.
The evolution of music allows for humanity to grow. It allows everyone to connect to their emotions and that is what is so significant about it.
“There’s always gonna be heartbreak, there’s always gonna be war, there’s always gonna be a passion for things so those elements will stand the tests of time,” Rowland said.
