On November 28, the day of Thanksgiving, families and friends gather. They go around the table, saying what they are thankful for. The smell of fresh food fills the room. Families are together and ready to eat.
Highlands High School offers a culinary class. This class cooks meals and gives students experience in important life skills.
Soon, the students are going to be making Thanksgiving food.
“I took the food class because it will help me throughout life and be a useful skill,” Addie Fisher (10) said.
Throughout the class, students will learn new recipes and how to use different parts of the kitchen.
Thanksgiving started in 1621. According to an article called Thanksgiving Day, “Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people”
Thanksgiving is a holiday meant to be celebrated with large amounts of food and spent with those students are grateful for. It is a day dedicated to gratitude.
“The Thanksgiving meal unit allows students to learn a dish or two that they can come home and cook for their family, Highlands High School culinary teacher Kelsey Sentney said.
When students at Highlands High School took a survey on their favorite Thanksgiving dish, the most popular response was a tie between pumpkin pie and mac and cheese. The least favorite was corn.
Overall, there is something everyone should be thankful for, and it’s important to think of and appreciate them on Thanksgiving.
