As issues arose last year with the FlexTime system and SOS, the school has decided to implement another change. Instead of the typical FlexTime, there is a new system called “Legacy.”
This change is because of the ongoing issue from last year, with students not signing up for FlexTime. This became an obstacle as it was a serious safety concern.
Assistant Principal Jennifer Nash stated, “Another thing is that we gave students a choice, and they chose to avoid what FlexTime they needed to attend. For example, making up a math test.”
One problem that this new system is causing is a lack of availability for extracurricular meetings. Now, since there is no longer a choice, clubs and student organizations can no longer meet during school hours.
A solution to this problem is currently in the works.
“Right now we are attempting to find time at least once a month during a fourth period FlexTime for clubs and organizations.”
Highlands High School English teacher, Katie Stewart, was one of the many teachers involved in this new system.
Stewart said, “The general consensus was that we want students who are very involved and proud of their school and want to leave a lasting impact.”
This new schedule will take some getting used to for both teachers and students, but as the year goes on, the LEGACY system should prove to be beneficial through grades and overall education.
