After the resignation of the previous assistant principal, Jennifer Forgy, Highlands welcomed a familiar face into the role. Former English teacher, Jennifer Nash, now has a unique opportunity to bring her years of classroom experience and management into a leadership position.
In fact, she had already been looking for an opportunity to use her second master’s in instructional leadership when the opportunity arose. She explained, “I had already started applying other places, and when this job came open I thought, ‘What better place?’”
Nash will be working directly with Principal John Darnell and will oversee numerous daily operations. According to Darnell, as assistant principal, her three main priorities are, “meeting with families, discipline, and attendance.”
Nash’s highly personable yet reasonably strict personality, in addition to her extensive history with Highlands, quickly distinguished her as an ideal candidate for the position.
Darnell commented, “She has sought leadership opportunities consistently since I have been here. She has a ton of experience within the building, and she is well respected when it comes to what she’s done in the classroom.”
Spanish teacher Emily Haffey, a member of the committee that promoted Nash, added, “She cares about every single kid in this building… and she knows that she can make a difference everywhere.” Her ability to deeply relate to her students provides her with a unique perspective regarding the numerous issues she will address.
Faculty members are not the only ones who have noticed Nash’s influence throughout the school. Zane Scherrer (9) said, “I haven’t had Mrs. Nash for a class, but I met her in the lunch room and she was super friendly.”
Gracie Knasel (11) also explained, “I think Mrs. Nash is going to be a great assistant principal. She’s nice, but also is kind of intimidating.”
With this new position, Nash is hopeful to improve attendance and teach students independent life skills. Not only does she plan to make steps towards helping students get to school, but also towards making it so that students want to come to school. In all, Nash plans to make significant strides towards improving attendance as well as communication throughout Highlands.
Nash’s philosophy for her new position is personal, yet strict. In her words, “I feel like I am firm, but fair… I think that I am able to empathize with people but I also have high expectations.” More than anything, Nash wants to help her students reach their fullest potential.
When it comes to discipline, Nash holds a similar viewpoint: “If (students) are making bad decisions I hope that through relationship, but also consequence, I can help them make better choices.” She values thorough communication and hopes to help every student feel more comfortable while they are at school.
In all, Nash is eager to apply her skills and knowledge to help build the future of Highlands High School.
