The seismogram from the earthquake.

On April 5th, 2024, New Jersey experienced a significant earthquake. It measured 4.8 on the Richter scale. This level of shaking isn’t typical for this region. What’s surprising is that the shaking wasn’t confined to New Jersey alone—people in Manhattan, New York City, felt it too. The earthquake struck late in the night, around 10:30 p.m.

The earthquake originated near Dover, New Jersey, just about 1.5 miles down. But it was powerful enough to cause buildings to wobble and windows to shake. Citizens of Manhattan also felt their buildings sway.

Fortunately, there wasn’t much damage nor was anyone seriously hurt, but it did scare a lot of people. Many took to social media to talk about their experiences and ask if others felt it too.

After the main earthquake, aftershocks continued throughout the weekend, numbering over 30 in total. While they weren’t as strong as the initial quake, they still caused worry among the residents.

Authorities advised people to be prepared for more aftershocks. They recommended securing loose items and having an emergency plan in place. They just wanted everyone to stay safe.

This earthquake shows that even places not known for earthquakes can have them. It’s a reminder for people all around the globe to always be prepared for unexpected events. Being ready for emergencies is important for everyone’s safety.
