Thursday, March 21st marked the opening night for the spring musical Damn Yankees. The show is about a small base program, the Washington Senators, dying for talent to beat the New York Yankees. Joe Boyd, an average Senators fan, was allowed to live his dream as the star player for his favorite team after making a deal with Mr. Applegate.
After making the deal with the devil, Joe Boyd became Joe Hardy and did everything he could to win a Pennant for the Senators before his time ran out. Although Hardy spent most of his time with the team, he tried to maintain his relationship with his wife, Meg Boyd. Throughout the show, Mr. Applegate carries out his mission by keeping Hardy’s focus on the game.
Seniors Jonah Moore and Jameson Zoller both portrayed their roles of Joe Boyd and Joe Hardy excellently, delivering the emotion Joe experiences to the audience. Senior Evan Stuart wonderfully exemplified the role of the devil, also known as Mr. Applegate throughout the musical. His solo “Those Were The Good Old Days” was a performance to remember, and succeeded in leaving his mark in the Highlands Theatre program.
The show incorporated some incredible stunts from the ensemble including jumping from the top of the dugout during “Blooper Ballet” and partner stunts during some of the dances. The ensemble consisted of multiple Highlands students such as Sophomore Dee Robinson, Freshman Henry Wegshort, Sophomore Rafe Pinkson, and Junior Evy Meyn. Overall the show was a success and a great last show for the seniors on the cast and crew.
