School lunch is a staple in nearly every school in America. At Highlands High School, one of the most anticipated lunches is the calzones–sold once a month on late arrival day. However, students have noticed that they have not been served, but why?
Recently, calzones have not been served. Despite the monthly late arrivals, our school still has yet to produce the highly anticipated calzones, and students aren’t happy. So where have they gone?
Student Ellie Schilling shares her opinions on the disappearance of the calzones:
“At the beginning of the year when there were no calzones I was disappointed. They should come back because we all miss them and I’ve been craving them for weeks.”
As it turns out, the calzones have not been discontinued. Laura Witte, a Highlands High School lunch lady, explained that calzones are very time-consuming to make. We are currently too understaffed to make enough calzones for the entire school in time.
Mrs. Witte said: “We still have calzones. It honestly depends on whether or not we have enough staff to prepare them because we make them from scratch.”
Mrs. Witte went on to explain that Highlands High School’s cafeteria has been very short-staffed recently, making it very difficult for the cafeteria to function normally and provide the regular menu. Mrs. Larwitty made it clear that the work being done in the cafeteria is funded. These are real jobs that are open and need to be filled.
Mrs. Witte said: “This is all paid work. We do have two women who usually come in and volunteer right before lunch starts but everyone is usually paid.”
For many, lunchtime is one of the times when people can catch up with friends that they might not see any other time during the school day getting to join for a meal either prepared from home or made inside the school cafeteria.
But the work behind the school lunch is easy to overlook, and it’s important to remember the work that is put into our school meals. So the next time you get school lunch, remember to think of the ladies who put so much work into your lunch, taking responsibility and making sure you have a nutritious meal each day.
