After school, the empty hallways that were once rumbling with the noises of children, now echos with a handful of laughter that belongs to individuals whose lives are about to be changed forever where passions are formed, life-long friendships and lessons of a lifetime that can’t be taught in a regular school day. This is a place where psychology is tested without one even knowing it.
In psychology, when grouped like-minded humans can openly discuss subjects that often go unnoticed without judgment. An example of this is mental health and how it affects children who do after-school clubs or extracurricular activities. After-school clubs and extracurriculars are often breeding grounds for self-discovery, shaping the mental health of those who are constantly searching for their sense of self-identity. At Highlands, we have been shaping the futures of individuals for years. One example of this is by providing students with a plethora of clubs. Everything from the Korean Club to the Chess Club to GSA (Gender Sexualities Alliance) club at Highlands possesses much diversity.
World history teacher, Kelly Booth said: “A couple of years ago I had a group of invested students that wanted the time to have some meetings and fellowship and they asked me if I could sponsor it! I was very honored and said ‘Of course! I will sponsor it!’ I think it’s beautiful that with clubs like GSA, children can FEEL they always have a place to go whenever they like. Our club schedule is very flowy because all the children are super busy and it’s nice to know that if you have something you want to chat about or just want to check in, you’ll always have a place to go.” The existence of clubs such as the GSA underscores the school’s dedication to providing safe spaces for self-expression and support. As Booth pertinently puts it, the clubs can become sanctuaries where students can freely explore aspects of themselves.
With extracurriculars and clubs, students can have the opportunity to learn subjects that aren’t necessarily taught in school. Sophomore Dee Robinson thought clubs affected mental and social health, said: “I’m in Mock Trial and I think it gives a lot of opportunity for students to meet people outside of your grade. Because of Mock Trial, I have met a lot of seniors who are awesome and helped me learn a lot! I like this club a lot because it’s very academic, but it’s not necessarily something that can be learned in school. For example, we learn about the law and how to perform cases, and it’s awesome!”
Beyond the academic curriculum, clubs like Mock Trials offer students opportunities for connections and practical knowledge that can serve in the future. The club environment, with its flexibility and welcoming atmosphere, serves as a vital place for busy or invested students seeking a moment of connection or simply a space to share thoughts.
The once bustling hallways, now surrounded by the laughter of those on the brink of transformative experiences, encapsulate the physical and spiritual growth beyond the traditional classroom. These extracurriculars are not just ‘clubs’, they are portals into territories of the mind and heart.
Sophomore Avery Nieportie added by saying: “I think clubs have a positive impact on your social life and it depends on the person, but for me being in winter guard, I know I have a lot more friends than I would have if I hadn’t joined.”
the voice of students speaks about the profound impact of extracurriculars on mental and social health. Beyond the academic curriculum, The after-school landscape at Highlands represents more than just a physical space for the requirements. It is a canvas where the vivid colors of individuality and passion paint the pathways to self-discovery.
In conclusion, the after-school experience at Highlands is a place of life’s diverse offerings. It is a stage where young minds explore, form bonds, and learn lessons that transcend textbooks. The clubs at Highlands are not just extracurricular activities; they are havens for self-discovery, where the tapestry of each student’s identity is woven with threads of passion and valuable life lessons.
