With the summer approaching and the sun shining, the good weather also comes with spring testing. By May, students may have needed to take the ACT, SAT, KSA, and/or various class exams. The exhausting life at school is filled with cold classrooms and a loss of motivation from people at the school. The initiative and grades tend to drop after the second quarter, and procrastination steadily increases.
The act of putting things off can lead to danger. Cramming everything needed to study the night before a test will hurt the ability to retain the necessary content. While some may memorize the answers, it becomes difficult to deeply understand the material. This could lead to stress later when needing to remember and utilize the knowledge.
Time management is a good way to fix this issue. This could be done by setting up a schedule for when and what to study, as well as leaving time for breaks during overwhelming moments.
The conditions in which someone studies can also affect how well information can be retained. The place to set up should enhance productivity and provide a comfortable environment. Having a dim light and music can reduce productivity and increase distractions.
Conditions at home may prevent the ability to concentrate on doing schoolwork. Whether it be younger siblings or busy parents, luckily, there are many places to set up shop. Around the city of Fort Thomas, many places could be used as a great place to work.
Hidden Chapter is a new bookstore in town, and next door is a small coffee shop owned by the same people. They have warm lighting and friendly faces. The bookstore is quiet and respectful of your space.
Fort Thomas Coffee is another great option for a study session. This shop is louder than the others, but it is a great place of relaxation for the community. They have a variety of tables and chairs for everyone’s preference. Their coffee and food are also allergy-friendly.
“I love to work at Fort Thomas Coffee, everyone is very friendly, sometimes it can be loud with all the people in there,” Bella Burwick (11) said.
The school library is an easy location to go to, and it’s made for students and teachers. The library is a great location for studying because staff may be able to provide you with resources or materials that are not able to be accessed. They have a variety of tables and chairs in a large space, leaving room for working alone or in a group.
“I go to the library when I need a quiet place to work and concentrate on my assignments.” Alli Meyers (10) said.
Individual studying is a way students can practice independence, which can be peaceful and improve studying skills. One issue people may run into is that there is no one to ask for help when stuck or confused.
Another downside is the use of technology; losing focus to scroll on social media is easy, and not relying on someone there can make cheating tempting.
Study groups with friends or peers can be a helpful tool. This can be useful because, in this setting, everyone should be holding each other accountable to succeed. Groups of people prevent procrastination and influence productivity.
