Highlands is known as a notorious school for its athletic department and sports teams, but the clubs at the school always recruit students with different interests.
Joining clubs can provide a bonding experience that focuses on various aspects of student life, ranging from clubs to help students explore potential careers, to clubs that are meant to be used as an outlet for hobbies. They all have benefits that each student should explore.
“I am involved in art club, Drama club, TriM, and Fashion club,” Isabella Carty (9) said.
At Highlands, there are clubs for people wanting to gain experience for potential careers and for students looking to have fun. While some students are involved in multiple clubs, others focus on a singular club that fits one of their main interests.
“I am involved in the Red Cross club,” Ella Taylor (10) said.
Many students join clubs to hang out with friends or try something new, but others join to gain experience and knowledge to pursue future careers.
“I wanted to join because my friends were doing it, and I want to work in the medical field when I am older,” Taylor said.
At Highlands, administrators and students are constantly coming up with ways to impact student life and the activities students are involved in after school. Joining a club helps get students involved and can impact their school experience by having something consistently on their schedules.
“I feel like now I always have things to do and I am always up to date with things going on,” Carty (9) said.
While clubs offer a place of consistency for some, they can offer a better understanding of the community and what others do to advocate for different causes. “It has given me more respect for healthcare providers and people who donate their blood,” Taylor (10) said.
Clubs offer an abundance of different topics that could be explored by every student. Joining something different can be nerve-racking, especially if it is new, but the clubs at Highlands are focused on making safe spaces for students to come together and express themselves.
“I would tell the students that everyone is super laid back and very nice. Everyone is always welcoming, even if you’ve never done it,” Carty said.
For some students, joining clubs could seem overwhelming and stressful, but with flexible meetings and schedules, clubs can be an easy way to unplug and have fun with peers. Not only do the clubs at Highlands offer a fun experience outside of school, but they can look great on college applications when it is time to apply for college.
“It is not very much work, it’s fun, and it looks good on college applications,” Taylor said.
Joining clubs at Highlands is something that every student should explore, and can be an eye-opening experience for students wanting to gain experience that can be applied to school life and their futures.
