FCCLA crushed regionals at the FCCLA Region 7 STAR Event competition on February 22. However, the preparation for the events started in January.
Two regional officers from Highlands, Shelby Shields(12) (President) and Cydni Martin (11) (Vice President of Peer Education), helped lead the meeting.
“I started my event planning in November because it was a 3-month project called Season of Service. I started by creating a timeline, building a budget, and then picking my partners and resources. After that, I then followed that by implementing that project in winter,” Martin said.
Many students spent months preparing for regionals, which required hard work and dedication, resulting in major success.
Highlands dominated in their competitions, with almost every competitor taking home first place against other students from Region 7.
Region 7 includes Highlands High School/Middle School, Newport High School, Boone County High School, Walton Verona High School, Cooper High School, Walton Verona High School, Williamstown High School, Grant County High School, Pendleton County High School, Philip A. Sharp Middle School, Campbell County High School, and lastly Beechwood High School.
The following students won first place in their divisions: Ellie Rogiers (10), Lainey Wagner (10), Kaitlyn Dixon (11), Cydni Martin (11), Annie Kunhein (11), Eva Smith (9), Bella Thomas (9), Lily Frey (9), Shelby Shields (12), Kendall Shields (10), Kenna Urlage (10), Ava Muzumdar (11), and Emily Twehues (11).
“My favorite part of preparing for regionals was learning about how FCCLA plans the Homecoming parade and being able to share that with people before and during the events.
“Regionals was a fun experience with all of the other schools around,” Kenna Urlage (10) said.
The students who placed second were Penelope Kolb (11) and Sheila Chitic (12).
Overall, Highlands FCCLA had an outstanding performance and is now preparing for the state competition.
