At Highlands High School (HHS), students are not just learning inside of school hours; they are exploring new opportunities outside of the walls with the clubs that the school has to offer. They develop skills such as communication, empathy, and problem-solving when dealing with hands-on activities.
There are many benefits to becoming a part of a club, including lifelong friendships to bond over interests.
The opportunities at HHS are endless. HHS has over twenty clubs that students can participate in.
Through these clubs, students get the chance to grow, both socially and personally, which provides endless opportunities for students to learn and find new capabilities.
“Fort Thomas grows as a group and a lot of people are going to go into theater or different clubs in college or professionally. so this is really helpful for them and it’s a lot of fun,” Hannah Nieporte (11) said.
Clubs at HHS allow students to express themselves in new environments while allowing them to get out of their comfort zone. This includes the science club, where students can help other students who need tutoring.
“Science Club has the opportunity to try new things because I’ve always been academically inclined, but I’ve never tried to share that knowledge with other people. So it’s kind of letting me help others with something that I am good at and enjoy doing,” Ethan Adhikary (10) said.
By participating, they not only strengthen existing talents but also develop new expertise.
“I definitely developed communication skills because I have to help not only high school students, but also middle school students. I kind of have to think of how I need to talk to the person and the best way they’re going to receive the information I’ve given to them,” Adhikary said.
While being a part of these extracurricular activities, students are guaranteed to make many lifelong memories along the way.
“My sophomore year I won outstanding technician for my work, and that was really awesome. It was an art bouquet ceremony and it was really nice to celebrate all of our combined efforts and get recognized for all the things that we have,” Nieporte said.
Joining clubs makes for excellent opportunities to gain great experiences, connect with people, and help others develop their learning.
“It not only helps the person that you’re tutoring, it helps you as well. If they’re having struggles in something you don’t struggle in, you can help them get to a master speed level. This also helps you personally and it helps with your own experiences,” Adhikary said.
