Baseball tryouts have officially started on Monday, February 10 and coaches are preparing players for the season.
Some players are preparing physically and mentally to know what they should be confident about, and what they should work on.
“I think my defense as a catcher definitely is my strongest attribute but I’m also good at hitting. Last season in the second half of the season I hit over .500 and got a lot of RBIs,” catcher Kai Anderson (10) said.
Coaches also have been planning leading up to tryouts. They have figured out what they will be looking for during tryouts to determine what aspiring players will make the team.
“We will be looking at attitude, being a good teammate, and other criteria besides just skill. Skill means a lot but that isn’t the only part of a player’s game,” Baseball coach and special education teacher Mitch Meyer said.
Players have been thinking about what they have improved on during the off-season so they can go into the tryouts more confident.
“I think hitting for sure. I put a lot of time into hitting over the off-season. So hopefully that translates over to tryouts,” Catcher and outfielder Max McNay (12) said.
Coaches have figured out what kind of drills they will be having the players go through as well. They want players that have a good attitude and are positive to teammates.
“We will be scoring on fielding, hitting, pitching, speed, and agility drills,” Meyer said.
Making the team also benefits the players trying out. If they make the team it could open the gates to more recognition from travel teams or college coaches.
“It’s more for me because I’ve been playing all my life. and it’s always like I’ve always looked for playing for the high school,” McNay said.
