Everyday, things are constantly evolving. Fashion is a worldwide form of expression that reflects peoples cultures, personalities, and interests. Schools are an excellent place to pick up new trends and hear of up and coming brands.
Using style to express who we are is something everyone does on a daily basis without even realizing it. Not only do students get to come to school showing their personalities off, but teachers as well.
“My style is for my age group, I try to stay kind of on trend with fashion. Though, I also find myself tending to gravitate towards more classical styles as well,” fashion teacher Ahren Wagner said.
Many teens in a school atmosphere tend to dress like their friends in class. Throughout the years, style has become more relaxed. Typically nowadays students can walk into a class room and see less jeans and more sweatsuits.
“I would describe my personal style as casual or athletic. I’d say social media influences my style, or honestly online shopping and pinterest,” Corienne Moffitt (10) said.
When it comes to spreading fashion news, social media is the number one way to do so.
TikTok is another application that shares trends with younger generations. Seeing what celebrities and popular influencers are wearing/buying, causes people to do the same thing.
“You always have a change in fashion, things that are popular, especially with teens, they move a little bit quicker. Two or three years ago we started to see some more skin, shorts got shorter, waistbands lowered, and cuts of shirts became more revealing. So we’ve seen that happening, showing a little bit more skin, but we had that back in the early 2000s too. Everything just kind of circles back around,” Wagner said.
Seeing clothing items from previous years gives our world this feeling of living on a loop. Today, kids are typically wearing things from their parents’ closets such as cargo pants, vintage t-shirts, and the look of denim on denim.
“Low rise pants are something I’ve definitely seen and also off the shoulder tops which I feel like were big in the 80s,” Moffitt said.
Every decade has dedicated something to today’s fashion, whether that is reasons not to repeat it or ideas on how to improve it. 1980s fashion trends that are seen today consist of crop tops, leggings, statement pieces, bright colors, and chunky/thick shoes.
“The loafers or the chunky shoes are a huge late 90s early 2000s trend,” Wagner said.
Chunky shoes are attractive choices for fashion today for a mixture of function, comfort, and style, making them popular anywhere.
For a while, thin shoes dominated the fashion scene. Today, there is a growing desire for something bolder and more expressive. Chunky shoes are the perfect shoe to have both the minimalist and bold aesthetic.
“There is a lot of fast fashion like cheetah print for example, or low waisted jeans,” Moffitt said.
Animal prints, especially cheetah prints have been popping up in streetwear for a while now. Mostly seen in footwear, accessories, and jackets. The edgy/different spirit of animal prints fits perfectly with today’s streetwear aesthetic, which highlights uniqueness and individuality.
