This year, the Highlands wrestling team will be saying goodbye to a few valuable seniors. The coaches and wrestlers have worked hard to make this season memorable.
Not only have they learned new moves but they have learned grit.
“Keep working no matter how hard it gets or how hard the struggle is, you just have to keep working,” Tj Hicks (12) said.
Getting better in any sport takes time and effort. The seniors this year have been working hard for multiple years to ensure they are successful.
“This season has been my best one yet, but there is still lots of improvement for me,” Travis Votel (12) said.
Wrestling is a difficult sport. Throughout practices, the team learns more than just the moves; they learn life lessons they will carry into the future.
“It has made me a really hard worker,” Aiden Rogers (12) said.
Through the lessons they have learned, their growth over the seasons has been evident.
“I think my growth has been pretty good from my first year of High school wrestling, I didn’t win too many matches then,” Hicks said.
The more an athlete grows in a sport, the higher their goals will be. This year the seniors have high expectations on how their seasons will end.
“My end goal for this season is definitely state podium or to win it all,” Votel said.
As the seniors leave and new wrestlers come in, it’s important to remember what they have left behind for the team. The majority of the seniors are captains and they will be leaving their teammates with the guidance they need to thrive.
“I think I’m leaving behind being a good leader for my teammates,” Rogers said.
