With the arrival of winter, students have been left to walk through harsh weather conditions, such as ice, sleet, snow, and freezing temperatures. While other schools in the area may have school buses or other means of public transportation, the Fort Thomas Independent School District is primarily composed of walkers and drop-offs.
A result of this is that students are forced to walk through this winter’s harsh conditions.
They bundle up in multiple layers and endure the snow getting lodged into their New Balances and UGGs.
“If the roads are icy and snow has not been lifted off sidewalks, students should not be required to hike in the dangerous snow and possibly risk getting injured,” Ava Lipniskis (11) said.
However, even with this weather affecting the students, teachers have another outlook on these problems.
“One of the best things about Highlands is that we get to go to school, instead of have to go to school,” superintendent Brian Robinson said.
Highlands does value providing its students with an unparalleled education, and any day that these Bluebirds can get some more knowledge, is for the better right? After all, how many days can one miss before it starts to take its toll on things like scheduling and testing?
Not only that but the more days Highlands is forced to miss due to weather conditions, the more days they are required to add at the end of the year, overall resulting in a delayed summer break.
“When I see the days in our school calendar, I think it’s important to maximize the money that we have,” Robinson said.
Of course, there are exceptions, so if the weather is bad enough for cars to be unavailable sources of transportation, there of course will be either a delay until the roads are opened or a snow day that will have to be added towards the end of the year. The compromise for now seems to be that attendance is held for late students stuck in the snow, so that way at the very least attendance isn’t affected and students still make it to class.
Regardless, this winter is for sure a frosty one, so make sure to bundle up and be careful on sidewalks.
