Every Wednesday afternoon from May through October, the parking lot of the Mess Hall in Tower Park transforms into something more than just a place to buy groceries; it becomes a hub for community, sustainability, and local town pride.
The Fort Thomas Farmers Market has slowly become a beloved part of city life yearly, offering fresh, locally grown produce, handmade pieces, and a chance to connect with neighbors face to face. In a world run by big-box stores and fast-paced living, the Farmers’ Market brings a fresh taste to our town. The food is fresh, the money supports local growers, and people know exactly where their food comes from.
“The food was fresh and clean, there were also food trucks that were serving things like fresh juice, and I got some delicious BBQ from this extremely friendly vendor who made me feel welcomed and appreciated. Another good part was how the food had a homemade feel; it’s just a special place,” Ryder Perme (12) said.
The market has over 35 different vendors throughout the full duration of it, with options ranging from fruits and vegetables to soups, crafts, and baked goods. Many vendors come from within a few miles of Fort Thomas, offering goods that aren’t only higher quality, but also lower in the damage they cause to the environment, being more aware of the impact compared to mass-produced goods. Supporting the market isn’t only good for one’s health, but also good for the planet.
“Supporting local businesses is one of the best things you can do, not only for them but for yourself. It cuts down the effects of global pollution, builds relationships, and gives you a sense of helping,” Computer Tech teacher Jaime Richey said.
Besides the food, the Fort Thomas Farmers Market has also become a gathering place for residents. Citizens can frequently see live music, food trucks, and family-friendly events. This year in particular, they have added things such as “Wellness Wednesday,” where they do cooking demonstrations to educate people about healthy living and clean eating.
“It’s more than just food, it’s so nice to get to go to some of these events and see familiar faces while relaxing and enjoying yourself. There are games and concerts, and all the while there is delicious fresh produce and food trucks you can get into.” Assistant Nurse Nikkia Scherrer proclaimed
But what really sets the market apart is its building of community. In times when everything feels distant, the market is a reminder that real connection.
