The Kentucky Derby is a highly entertaining Kentucky tradition. It is the race that all horse trainers look forward to and one day hope to win–the race that every horse racing fan looks forward to watching.
The Kentucky Derby is an important event for Kentucky, especially for the many horse trainers and owners of the farms that the horses are held at.
“You can ask anyone in this business what race they want to win and it’s always the KY Derby, lots of bigger purses but nothing matches the Derby. It’s what we all grow up hoping to win,” Stallion Sales Manager of Spendthrift farm in Lexington, Mark Toothacker, said.
Many horses run throughout the year with different farm owners and trainers. But there is no feeling like having a horse in the Kentucky Derby.
“We were beyond thrilled to have 2 in the 2020 KY Derby, unfortunately Thousand Words flipped over in the paddock and was scratched. I told our GM Ned Toffey that if the Derby Gods were looking down, Authentic would win.” Toothacker said.
Many feelings run through a horse owner’s head when their horse is running in the Derby. But it’s a different feeling when their horse wins the race.
“Jubilation! I was jumping 3 feet high the length of the stretch, now feeling like that. Dream come true!” Toothacker said.
There are many great horses to run in the Derby every year. But only one can win.
“They have to beat Journalism who has looked fantastic. I’m always rooting for our brand so I will try to beat him with Rodriguez and Sovereignty.” Toothacker said.
