The smell of a newly bought book, the flip of a page, and the quiet rustle of paper. Each moment feels like an invitation to dive into a new world, where imagination soars, vocabulary grows, and empathy deepens.
Reading is such a magical experience, but only about 20% of people read for fun on a daily basis.
Everyone reads daily without even thinking about it. Everyday tasks such as work, school, and scrolling on social media involve some sort of reading.
Whether it’s reading on a screen or a physical book, reading has so many benefits.
“It has allowed me to consume much more general knowledge, such as pop culture and psychological thoughts,” Book club member Phol Jiraphasuksakul (11) said.
Reading is a way to obtain knowledge, something we might not have access to through conversations or TV.
“Books can be a great way to get out of your head, especially if you’re stressed or worried about something,” Librarian Jenny Davis said.
Reading doesn’t just allow us to escape, but it also enriches our minds, offering countless benefits such as improving vocabulary, enhancing creativity, and deepening empathy. In fact, the simple act of reading regularly can have lasting positive effects on both mental and emotional well-being.
“Reading can help in lots of ways, and since there are so many writers, you can basically find any book you want, whether it be fiction or nonfiction; there are so many options,” Davis said.
Anyone can discover exactly what they seek in a book, which is what makes reading so uniquely special.
There are also countless ways to read. Whether it’s on a phone, a physical book, or a laptop, reading can happen anytime, anywhere.
“I like reading a physical book because if I read on my phone, I’ll get distracted,” Jiraphasuksakul said.
This highlights a common challenge in today’s digital age, where constant notifications and distractions can slow down our ability to fully immerse ourselves in a book. By choosing a physical book, readers can create a more focused and mindful reading experience.
“With so much going on in our world, reading is an amazing way to clear out some of the noise that’s going on,” Davis said.
