This year, the Highlands theatre department will continue the tradition of giving seven students a chance to write and direct their own one-act plays. A one-act play is a performance consisting of a single act or scene.
The seven students writing a one-act are Sophie Uhl (11), James Wilson (11), Em Varland (12), Ben Phetzer (11), Noah Varland (11), Nora Shadwell (11), and Nellie Albritton (11).
“There’s a lot that goes into them, we have to do a lot of paperwork, have to read our shows multiple times, get to know what it’s like to direct,” Phetzer said.
Not only is the process of working on a one-act difficult, it starts way earlier in the year than someone might think.
“We started working early September, finalized our show pickings late September, and held our auditions last week,” Varland said.
However, the process is even longer for the students who chose to both write and direct their one-act.
“I started writing mine in October and I am still writing,” Shadwell said.
There is still a lot to do before the seven students will be prepared to show their one-acts to the school, but when they do the plays are expected to be impressive, especially with all the hard work being put into them by the directors. T
One-acts are expected to be shown May 2-3, and everyone is welcome to go watch.
