On Thursday, August 22nd, the boys varsity soccer team ventured to Boone County High School to take on the Boone County Rebels.
The junior varsity team kicked off the night with a 2-1 victory. After the game was over, varsity took the field.
The game stayed tied at 0 until about halfway into the first half when Boone County scored a goal during a penalty kick. The game remained 0-1 going into the second half.
Captain Harrison Gamble (12) said that the team made a big switch from the first half to the second half.
“We struggled to connect and communicate in the first half and had no life. At half, we came together and started to believe in each other. It showed in the second half and we started playing for one another.”
The Birds kept that mentality going into the second half. They picked up the intensity and it paid off. Nick Wilson (11) scored a goal, assisted by Luis McVicker (10) and Logan Nickelman (12), with less than 25 minutes left.
Wilson said, “During the play, I knew that Luis would give us a good service and I was just focused on finishing, we had missed a few chances earlier on and I wanted to make sure we capitalized. Afterwards, I shifted my focus to make sure we could get another one and bring home the win.”
The Birds knew that if they wanted to pull out the win they needed to keep their intensity and spirits high.
Just like that, under 10 minutes later, Nickleman scored to take the lead. The birds continued to defend until the horn blew, securing them the victory. This moved their record to 2-0, still undefeated.
