Wednesday Addams at the Nevermore uniform.

“Wednesday,” is a new American supernatural comedy horror show which has become more popular every day. It was released on November 23rd on Netflix and now is the most popular series on this streaming service. More than 341 million hours of watching just for ONE week! The story is based on the character Wednesday Addams from “The Addams Family”. The show was created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and has 8 episodes. Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, a 16-year-old girl who possesses psychic powers. She is sent to Nevermore Academy by her parents for causing mischief at other schools. There, Wednesday faces a lot of difficulties.

Ortega also plays Goody Addams, Wednesday’s deceased ancestor whom Wednesday sees in visions of the past. There are many interesting and exciting facts about this show. For example, Christina Ricci, who played Marilyn Thornhill in the Netflix show “Wednesday”  also played Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family (1991) when she was ten years old, and again in Addams Family Values (1993).

Ortega said she was super scared about taking this role, not just because of the very famous director Tim Burton, but because of the confusing situation as well. Ortega was sure that she wanted to make a slightly different character from the old movie but did not know how it would work on the same film set with Ricci. Later she said that everything was fine and there were no problems.

Speaking of Jenna and the process of her casting, Tom Burton, the director of the first four episodes, found Ortega by himself and offered to make a video call. Ortega was on set in a different country and their zoom conference took just ten minutes, however, it was enough time for Burton to understand that she was perfect for this role.

It is all about details. ‘’Wednesday’’ was created by people who are really attentive to the details. Each decoration there has its own meaning, for example, all the gargoyles represent a different group of students at the school including sirens and vampires. The roof of the school “Nevermore” is similar to the roof of the Adams family estate. Jenna Ortega took a responsible approach to the role and especially learned to play the cello.

Also, the character “Thing” made a great impression on the audience.  Victor Dorobantu as Thing, a sentient disembodied hand and relative of Wednesday who is sent by Wednesday’s parents to watch over her at Nevermore Academy. The creators understood that they did not want to use an artificial hand for this character. Thing is a very meaningful person in this story and the animators did an outstanding job to make “Thing” a true star of this show.

There are multiple phenomenal and professional actors who are cast in “Wednesday,” Gwendoline Christie as Larissa Weems, the principal of the “Nevermore”. Catherine Zeta-Jones as  Morticia Addams, Wednesday’s mom. Luis Guzmán as Gomes Addams, Wednesday’s dad, and Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Wednesday’s roommate in “Nevermore.”

The series was shot with great attention to detail. Gloomy but solemn atmosphere, and a plethora of other things that viewers and film critics from the entire world have praised about this show. “Wednesday” is recommended not only by teenagers but also by cinematography experts, who are impressed by the acting and decorations. In conclusion, fans of this show are impatiently waiting for the second season.
