Juniors run for class office
Highlands High School is having an election among the Juniors for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Class Representative. We asked some of the juniors who are running for President and Vice President how it is going and what their plans are. The questions we asked are….
- What made you want to run?
- What are your plans if you win?
- What separates you from the other candidates?
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
Chanuhmi Abeysinghe
- What made you want to run?
“I wanted to run because I saw this as an opportunity to make a change in our school and be a voice to our student body. I wanted to be a person that every student can rely on and help make their school experience the best it can be. Being the president would allow me the chance to reach many people and hear their ideas.”
- What are your plans if you win?
“If I were to win the election, I would ask the student body for their input for organizing prom and creating activities in our school. What happens at our school will not be a decision solely made by me, rather it will be something that everyone would have a say in.”
- What separates you from the other candidates?
“I would say that I am different from other candidates because I already have some ideas for prom that I would like to share with our student body. I am also an open-minded person that welcomes different ideas and opinions. I am hardworking and will put in the effort to make a fun and creative environment at our school.”
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
“My inspiration for my campaign poster came from my friends and family. Two of my closest friends came up with the idea for the one that says ‘Change and Chanuthmi’. They also came up with the ‘pick c, it is always reliable’. The ‘ABC and CBA’ poster idea was inspired by a Jackson Five’s song.”
Sophia Scherrer
- What made you want to run?
“I really like being a part of the community and I feel like this role will let me play a larger role to help our community.”
- What are your plans if you win?
“I’m super excited to plan prom but I love public speaking so I’m excited for the speeches I will give at graduation.”
- What separates you from the other candidates?
“All of the other candidates are great, but I talk to a lot of different people and I feel like I know everyone in our grade which will definitely be helpful.”
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
“Mrs. Ehmeen helped us come up with the slogan and Jude’s cast is kind of iconic so we knew it would be a memorable look.”
Chris Buchert
- What made you want to run?
“I felt that I would best suit what it meant to be the president of the school, feeling I embodied what it meant to be a Highlands blue bird.”
- What are your plans if you win?
“Give 110% in everything I get to do for the grade and school.”
- What separates you from the other candidates?
“I embody what it means to be a bluebird Fort Thomas born and raised. I have been ingrown with Fort Thomas tradition and excellence.”
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
“I wanted large letters of vote because I felt the largest issues with our school class election was everyone in the grade voting then I added my slogan in big enough print on the side, ‘if you want the best vote success’ then to the right of that a picture of myself so people know who ‘the best’ is the at the bottom what in running for.”
Tyler Whitney
- What made you want to run?
“I wanted to run because it allows my views to be seen in the school and also allows me to represent my class and give them a good view of what our class really is.”
- What are your plans if you win?
“If I win I plan to listen to the students’ wants and needs. Also, I would want to make sure prom is as good as it is every year.”
- What separates you from the other candidates?
“What separates me is that I truly want what’s best for the student body and what’s best for the school.”
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
“My inspiration with the poster was to just allow the students to see I’m a regular student just like them.”
Caydo Kruger
- What made you want to run?
“I wanted to try and win because I’m very competitive.”
- What are your plans if you win?
“I’m gonna make prom pretty sick and I want the people to decide so I’ll have them choose because that’s what the country was about.”
- What separates you from the other candidates?
“My grades and my after school activities.”
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
“Jonah made them so I don’t know, him.”
Hollan Schweitzer
- What made you want to run?
“Running for class officer has been something I’ve wanted to do since the beginning of high school. I remember when elections were taking place my sophomore year, and it really inspired me to run. I like putting myself in positions to help benefit all of the people around me, and I think as class president, I can hear the voices of my peers, and make changes to make their high school experience the best possible.”
- What are your plans if you win?
“If I win class president, I want to start right away reaching out to companies and individuals we need to work with to make prom a great night. As class president, and part of the student council, a large majority of planning prom falls on me. Also throughout my potential time as class president, I want to make sure that my peers have every opportunity to be heard. I want the voice of the people to be how the real decisions get made, I am just there to implement their decisions.”
- What separates you from the other candidates?
“I think one thing that separates me from the other candidates is my determination. Me and my filmer spent hours both taking pictures and filming my campaign video. Also the editing of the video was pretty intense. Not to discredit other candidates’ work in campaigning, but I think I took campaigning to the next level.”
- What was your inspiration for your campaign poster?
“My campaign poster was a picture of me from behind looking down over the soccer field. The inspiration for this picture was, I wanted to have an aspect of I’m always supporting my peers even when it’s not visual to them. Here I am watching the soccer game from a distance, and supporting the girls soccer team.”
