Remembering Mrs. Tonya Eide
From a video announcement by Principal Matthew Bertasso:
“Good Morning Highlands staff and students,
I’m saddened to announce that yesterday afternoon our colleague, teacher, and friend Mrs. Tonya Eide quietly and peacefully passed away. Mrs. Eide has battled cancer courageously for almost eighteen months. She fought like a warrior to spend as much time with her family and friends.
Mrs. Eide joined the Highlands family 24 years ago. She worked with every department, numerous students, and stepped up when help was needed. As a special education teacher and department chair, Mrs. Eide worked with students who had some of the most difficult struggles and did so with a smile, empathy, and patience. She was also a kind and giving mother, she cared for her children and family. She led by example and with love.
Mrs. Eide will be missed. She has left a wonderful and memorable mark on our school and community.
Today will be difficult for many teachers and students. We have spaces and help available for those who need some support or just a moment to reflect. You can ask your teachers for more information on locations where counselors and support will be available.
Students, I ask for your patience and understanding today as many of your teachers were very close to Mrs. Eide.
Thank you for caring for one another and for showing what it truly means to be a bluebird.”
The Hilltopper Staff is saddened about the loss of Mrs. Tonya Eide. We will remember her in the coming weeks.
Your donation will support the student journalists of Highlands High School - KY. Your contribution will allow us to cover our annual website hosting costs.

Mrs. Eide was one of the most kind and generous people i knew. I was very lucky to have had her as one of my teachers while attending Highlands. She had her hands full for sure with the group of us and probably the same for those future years. She always had a smile on her face no matter what though! i knew that even on the hardest of days, no matter what it may have been about, Mrs. Eide would always be there to listen if myself or even any of her students were having a bad or even an emotionally sad day. She made such an impact on my life and for that i am forever grateful for her. Mrs. Eide will never be forgotten! my thoughts and prayers go out to her 2 beautiful daughters, family and friends and also for those who have grown close over the course of many many years as even her students and teachers who have worked alongside her Highlands.RIP Mrs. Eide!
