The changes keep coming: Covid-19 rocks Prom and Prom to Dawn

Principal Matthew Bertasso’s Schoology update.

This week has brought a lot of changes and adjustments to Highlands High School, and those changes have not stopped.

On Tuesday, March 17th, Principal Matthew Bertasso posted a video update to address the school about further advancements and adjustments that HHS will make. One of these adjustments was Prom.

Northern Kentucky University ordinarily allows HHS to use the Student Union for Prom and Prom to Dawn. This being a significant shift that Bertasso addressed.

“The CDC announced that all organizations should avoid social gatherings of 50 or more people,” Bertasso explained. “In response to that, Northern Kentucky University has canceled all large events on their campus through May.”

This means that the original date for Prom has been affected. Shortly after affirming this, Bertasso mentioned that Prom and Prom to Dawn are not officially canceled. Instead, Prom will look a bit different than past years.

Junior Ava Rosenstiel has attended every dance available at Highlands High School. Recently, she has been crafting and altering her dresses for these events and began the process for her prom dress. “I kinda wanted to cry. I’ve been looking forward to this all year,” Rosenstiel stated.

Senior Nikki McKiernan was shocked at the news. McKiernan stated, “It’s unfortunate for seniors, but if it’s necessary, then, you know, you gotta do what you gotta do.”

Bertasso and the Prom to Dawn Committee are working diligently to come up with a plan for Prom and Prom to Dawn.

“The most reassuring thing I can say right now is ‘postponed.’ When it comes to ‘canceled’ there are a lot of factors that come into play here. We are trying to postpone anything that we can until we know more,” Bertasso stated. ” It will probably be postponed to late April or May. We might be holding in our Gym, the Field house, outside, or [something] else. We will see what parameters we need to [work] within at that time.”

This is a developing story. More details will be added as they surface.
