TikTok is used as an escape from life for teens and many others as a source of entertainment. In some cases, it is how individuals make a living.

TikTok creators are either commissioned to review products and gain sponsors, or they receive gifts from live streaming. Most importantly, this platform is used as a platform for communities and individuals to spread advocacy and get their message across. It is a good platform for small businesses to promote their products and services.

In 2018, the app Music.ly transitioned into Tiktok, which was merged with ByteDance, a Chinese-based internet technology company founded by Zhang Yiming. The controversy surrounding this regards to concerns that user data could access sensitive information through the app.

These concerns have prompted the US government to pass legislation regarding the ban of the app. The legislation gives ByteDance up to twelve months to sell their company or it will be banned in the US. Back in 2023, TikTok was banned on the devices of those who are in federal power. This was evoked by the Biden administration.

This decision has brought out extensive backlash from the public. US House member Thomas Massie states how he is opposed to this law. On March 13, Thomas Massie posted a video of his speech on Facebook. He said, “Today I claimed 20 minutes in opposition to the TikTok ban bill, and yielded time to several like-minded colleagues.”

Overall the public has a mixed opinion on this ban. The safety and privacy of individuals always comes first which is why some people are in support. However, the opposing side suggests that our information is already out there through other sources. Either way, the outcome turns out, there will be backlash and no one will ever find satisfaction.
