Even though the season is just beginning, the boys’ basketball team has been practicing since last season ended. Coach Kevin Lister-man talked about what his team does during the offseason, saying, “We put in a lot of time in the off season especially with skill work. Our guys have got up between 20,000 and 30,000 shots each since the end of last year. It exciting to see the results of that work.”

The main goal of the team this year is to bring a new level of excitement to the school and make it to the Sweet 16 State Tournament. To get to this point, the team will have to win the 9th region tournament, which the team hasn’t been to since 2014, but it’s a goal the team is working on. This year is exciting for boys basketball as they are playing a team from Australia on December 11, and will host the District Tournament for the 2017-2018 basketball season.

“The process of getting better every day is what we’re focusing on. The players want to do their absolute best and I am looking forward to seeing their efforts pay off individually and collectively,” said Mr. Listerman.

The girls’ team has similar goals for their season this year, mainly focusing on improving their score points, rebounding and pushing their limits. Coach Jaime Richey talked about her goals this season for the team, saying, “My goal is to help push my girls to their limits and help them learn to put themselves in positive positions on and off the court.”

The girls have been working out together as a team since the very beginning of Septem-ber and started basketball practice officially during mid-October. Practices are weekly and take up a lot of the girls’ time but each and every one of them is committed to the program. “I enjoy seeing the unselfishness every player has and how much commitment they put into this sport,” said Coach Richey. While the team is one of the smallest in the region, it doesn’t stop their determination to win. With the leadership of senior Brooke Dill, juniors Zoie Barth and Chloe Jansen, the team is looking forward to what hopes to be a great season!

Swimming and Diving

The swimming and diving team is already practicing and has their eyes on the prize, the state championship. “I really hope the team and I qualify for state and make the top 10 in the state for freestyle relay. However, I’m mostly looking forward to the fun we have as a team,” said senior Robert (Chas) Sand. The season usually starts early/ mid-November and ends in late February, which is when the State championship takes place. Last year, the team won the Region 7 Combined title and at state, the Bluebirds finished 16th in the state meet with 50 points while the girl’s team took 18th with 35 points. This year they’re hoping to get in the top 10. Chas talked about this year, saying, “We’re all looking to improve something and this year winning regionals is the main objective.” The Birds are ready to go! Bowling Last year, both the girls bowling team and the boys bowling team had a great year and now they’re looking to continue that streak. This year, both teams are looking to go all the way to state and bring home a win.

Coach Glenn Schmidt talks about what his plan for this 2017-2018 season is, saying, “We are concerned about our matches one week at a time. Each match we play, we move on and start focusing on the things ahead of us.” The season lasts normally 12 weeks and the girls’ team has already played two matches of their season. The boys’ team is similar, having played one game this season. Both teams practice for two hours every Monday and work on improving their techniques to ensure they make it to state this year.

“Both my girls’ team and boys team are very good. They have room for improvement which we will work on. I think we can go all the way and be state champs,” said Mr. Schmidt.

The season is just beginning and the Birds can’t wait to get out there and show their skills!
