Dear Evie and Dee: Handling the Stress of School

Dear Evie and Dee,

School is so mentally and physically exhausting. It causes me much anxiety and only leads to my other mental health problems. I always have so much homework and I feel overwhelmed all of the time.

Sincerely,

Overwhelmed Student

Dear Overwhelmed Student,

School can be very exhausting, but there are ways to handle this stress. One huge of cause of stress for almost all students, is homework. In a past issue, we gave advice on how to effectively deal with procrastination. If you struggle with procrastination, read this article. However, some students may not procrastinate at all, and still find themselves stuck with hours of homework every night. This can be very exhausting, but there are ways to deal with it. First of all, when you get home from school, take a break. Get a snack, watch an episode of a TV show, or even take a short nap. When you’ve had some time to relax and recharge, start by planning out your agenda for the rest of the day. It helps to write down everything you have to do, and physically cross things out when you finish them. Take things one at a time, only focus on the assignment or task in front of you. Once you finish homework for one class, cross it off, and move on to the next. Before you know it, your homework will be done, and you’ll hopefully have time to relax before getting up for school the next morning. However, when you have sports, extracurriculars, work, etc., it’s even more difficult to balance homework. If you find yourself in this position, try talking to your teachers about feeling overwhelmed, and don’t feel afraid to ask for extra help on a certain assignment. Your teachers are very understanding, and know what it feels like to be overwhelmed, they are here to help you. However, if you’re having trouble with anxiety, then this could be a bigger issue. Sometimes anxiety is easy to deal with, but sometimes it can be a real problem. If you struggle with anxiety talk to your parents, counselors, or even your friends. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help.

Sincerely,

Evie and Dee
